Chapter 12: Arturo
Giovanni drove himself.
I sat in the passenger seat of his car, where I'd sat maybe four times in two years.
He drove to Cranston, to a bakery on Cranston Street with a faded green awning.
Gallo Pastry. Closed Saturdays at noon.
It was twelve fifteen.
A young man in an apron opened the door, patted Giovanni down in the doorway, and took his gun.
Giovanni let him.
The back room smelled of anise and burnt sugar.
Arturo Gallo sat at a small table covered in flour with a cup of espresso.
He was sixty-eight and very thin, with big ears and a cardigan buttoned wrong.
He didn't get up.
"Sit," he said. "You look like hell, Varano."
Giovanni sat.
"You came alone. Your father never came anywhere alone." Arturo sipped his coffee. "So. Il Porto."
"Il Porto."
"Why now? It's been eight months. You shot my nephew's friend and we both sent flowers and called it even."
"Because my wife is dead."
