Chapter 22: Rooney

The judge signed the decree in nine minutes.

I had thought it would take longer to end eleven years.

Courtroom 1506 had gray carpet and a flag, and a clerk who chewed gum behind her hand.

Joanne sat on my left with her red hair in a clip and a stack of papers she did not need.

Russell sat across the aisle with his lawyer and nobody else.

He had come without his mother, without a driver, without a watch.

"Mr. Tamblyn, you've reviewed the settlement?" the judge said.

"Yes, Your Honor."

"And you agree to it without reservation?"

"Without any."

The judge turned a page.

"The petitioner receives thirty percent of the respondent's shares in Tamblyn Route, current and future, with all voting rights attached."

That was the part Joanne had fought for.

It was also the part Russell's lawyer had stopped fighting in the hallway that morning, when Russell said, "Give her what she asks."

"The loan held by the respondent's holding company against Aldous Boatworks of Marquette, Michigan, is assigned to the petitioner, and is marked satisfied in full."

I heard Joanne breathe in.

The judge went on, in a flat clerk's voice.

"The petitioner is restored to her maiden name, Margaret Rooney, at her request."
