Chapter 17: Wolfsbane

I stood on the cold landing in Haakon's sweater and listened to my own heart.

"Did she see you?" I asked.

"No. I was up in the pines."

"Did anybody else see her?"

"Just me." Espen rubbed his face. "Kari, we have to tell him."

"Not yet."

"Not yet? She's in bed with the guy who's fighting her dad in six days."

"I know."

I looked at the tower door.

Behind it, the man who'd sat in the dark last night saying his daughter used to hold on to his ears.

"If I tell him now, what happens?" I said. "He goes down there. She cries. She says you're lying because you hate her friends. She says I'm lying because I want her gone. And Rune stands in the hall and tells the north the new Luna's turning a father against his only child."

Espen opened his mouth and shut it again.

"They're planning something," I said. "She didn't climb out a window at one in the morning to cuddle. When they move, I want the whole north watching."

"So what do we do?"

"We watch her. Every minute. You, me, Solveig."

"And him?"

"He gets to have one good morning with his daughter."

Espen looked at me for a long time.
