Chapter 24: Heir
Odette came up the lane on Sunday at three in a taxi, because she had sent her driver away.
I watched from the porch with Fern on my shoulder.
Cameron stood beside me with a hand on my back.
Trudy sat in the rocking chair with a basket of mending she was not mending.
The taxi stopped by the gate.
Odette got out slowly, in the black coat and the small hat, and she stood for a while at the bottom of the steps with the cane planted.
She did not climb them.
"Mrs. Draycott," I said.
"Miss Whitacre."
"You said you'd wait to be asked."
"I did."
"Then I'm asking." I shifted Fern. "Come up."
She climbed the steps with one hand on the rail.
At the top she stopped, a full arm's length from the baby, and I saw her look at the small face against my shoulder.
I saw her look at the dark hair.
"May I?" said Odette.
"Not yet."
She stood very still.
"First the terms," I said.
"I expected terms."
"You come on Sundays, at three, and you call before you do. You don't bring a lawyer, a driver or a gift that costs more than a loaf of Trudy's bread. You never say the word heir to me in this house."
Her mouth moved.
"She is a Draycott," she said. "She has a right."
"She has Cameron's shares in a trust, which she can do what she wants with when she's twenty-five. That's all the Draycott she owes anybody." I held her eyes. "Right now she's Fern Whitacre-Draycott, and she's six weeks old, and she needs people who'll sit where they're put."
