Chapter 30: The Gate
Hayes drove. I held the trophy, because I'd forgotten it was in my lap.
County Road 9 was empty on a Sunday morning. The billboard was still up half a mile from my gate.
NADINE, I'M SORRY. COME HOME. D.
Somebody had spray-painted a big blue willow across his half of the photo overnight.
"Patty?" Hayes said.
"Patty doesn't own blue spray paint."
"The young one does."
Dustin's pickup was parked crooked across the mouth of my gate, the way he'd parked it in June.
He was standing at the chain-link with a cardboard box in his arms.
Patty stood on the inside of the gate with her arms folded and a coffee in one hand. The young one and my two hands stood behind her, pretending to coil hose.
I got out.
Dustin looked like he'd slept in his truck.
He had. I could see the pillow on the seat.
His linen shirt was wrinkled. His hair had nothing in it. There was sand on his loafers from the beach.
