Chapter 7: Commit History

Jude looked at the photo on his phone.

Then he looked at my face.

Then at the photo again.

He put the phone face down on the bar.

"That's you," he signed. "With your hair down."

"That's my twin. Jenna."

"Is she Deaf?"

"Hard of hearing. She had an operation when we were seven. She has aids."

"Does she sign?"

"She used to. She stopped at twelve."

He rubbed his beard.

"He told me on the phone she co-wrote it," he signed.

"He said the two of them built it together, for you. For her sister who can't talk."

"He said it was the most personal product he'd ever pitched."

I set my soda down so I could use both hands.

"She can't write one line of code. She thinks Python is a snake."

Jude laughed out loud.

The bartender looked over. Jude didn't care.

"Okay," he signed. "So prove it to me."

He took a business card out of his wallet and wrote a time on the back.

Ten a.m.

"Tomorrow. My office. Bring the laptop."

Carrick Works was on the second floor of an old brick warehouse on Smallman Street.

The floors were scarred wood. The windows were huge and dusty.

There were forty people working there, and four of them were signing to each other by the coffee machine.

Nobody looked at me twice when I signed hello.

Jude's office had a desk covered in cables and a whiteboard covered in someone else's handwriting.

He pulled a second chair around to his side of the desk.

I opened my laptop and showed him the history.

Every change ever made to Speakeasy, in order, with a name and a time.
