Chapter 14: No Date For A Video

Griffin's POV

The video had four thousand views by eight in the morning, which at Carroway College is everybody.

I watched it on the walk to the student council office, with my hood up and my phone an inch from my nose.

It was three minutes of Miranda in the library, then Miranda in the coffee house window.

The last clip was Miranda in the stairwell with her face turned up to mine.

Every clip showed her tapping her leg.

Every clip showed me laughing at nothing.

The caption was cheerful and the music was a ukulele.

Beau had texted me a dozen times.

The last one said: DO NOT KILL ANYONE BEFORE BREAKFAST.

I had not slept, and I had not texted Miranda, and I had never wanted to break a promise so much in my life.

The council office was a glass room on the second floor of the student center.

Camille sat at a desk with her clipboard squared against the edge.

Two staffers sat beside her, a sophomore with a laptop and a junior with a stack of programs.

"Griffin!" she said, and her whole face lit up like a lamp. "I'm so glad you came."

"Take it down."

"Take what down?"

"The video."

"Oh, that." She laughed, light and rueful. "I'm so sorry. The page is automated, I didn't realize it posted."

"You made it."

"I was only going to show it at the gala, as a sweet little feature."

"You posted a girl's private life to four thousand people."
