Chapter 12: Fourteen Dollars and Ninety-Nine Cents

By the time Taylor let herself in with her own key, there were four thousand comments.

I was sitting on the bathroom floor with a towel on my head.

Some of the comments said I deserved it.

Some of them said I was a fraud and a thief and a snake.

One of them said they had found my yearbook photo.

"Stop reading," Taylor said, and took the phone out of my hand.

"They're saying I stole Grandma's bracelet."

"I know. I read it twice." She crouched beside me. "Hannah, nobody outside your family knows it was your grandmother's."

I looked at her.

"That's the point," she said. "Think."

I had been thinking, and I hadn't wanted to finish the thought.

I got up, and I walked down the hallway in my wet hair and knocked on Delaney's door.

"Busy!" my sister sang.

I could hear typing through the wood.

I could also hear the small sound she made when she was pleased with a sentence.

I had heard it all my life, over school essays and birthday cards.

"Dee," I said. "Did you post about me?"

"Post what?" The typing stopped. "I'm on the phone with Mom."

"Say hi."

"She says hi!"

I stood there a moment longer.

Then I went back to the kitchen and told Taylor.

Taylor nodded, slowly, and opened her laptop on the table beside Grandma's empty vase.

"Okay," she said. "Okay. So we answer."

"Answer how?"

"With the truth. In your own name. Where nine thousand people can see it." She started typing. "You're the one who has the receipt."
