Chapter 7: The Red Dress

Taylor dragged me into the vintage store on Main Street and pointed at a rack without a word.

The dress at the end of it was red, fitted, and cut to the knee with a low back.

"No," I said.

"Try it on."

"It's the dress from the post, Taylor. The one he said he couldn't stop looking at."

"Exactly." She held it up against me. "He wants a girl in a red dress. He can have one."

"He wants my sister in a red dress."

"Then he gets a surprise."

I tried it on, and the girl in the mirror didn't look plain.

She looked like someone who had never once been told to sit down and be good.

The tag said eighty-four dollars.

I put it on the counter and paid with the money I'd saved for a winter coat.

"What are you wearing over it?" Taylor asked, outside.

"The yellow cardigan."

"Number nine? The one the internet is furious about?"

"That's the one."

"Oh, you are evil," Taylor said, delighted. "I love it."

At home, Delaney was lying on the couch with her feet on the cushion and her phone on her chest.

I came in with the garment bag over my arm and tried to walk past.

"What's that?" she asked.

"A dress."

"Show me."

I didn't want to.

I unzipped the bag halfway, and she sat up.
