Chapter 29: Verdict
We crossed Marshall Street in the dark, all of us.
Darla first, in her cardigan, walking at a brisk clip.
Ike behind me. Nettie stayed across the street at the bar, behind the counter, with the bartender who'd said forever.
The courtroom filled in four minutes.
The eight women came in together and took the first two rows on the right, and nobody tried to take them.
The managing partner of the firm sat in the back on the left, in his silver hair, with the partner from the summer party beside him.
And in the last row on the right, at the far end from Ike, alone, sat Brantley.
He'd come back to watch.
I didn't know why. Maybe he didn't either.
The jury came in through the side door.
None of them looked at Kerri. Lawyers say that means something. I'd drawn it a hundred times, and it always did.
"Has the jury reached a verdict?"
The older man from the back row stood up. He was the foreman.
"We have, Your Honor."
The clerk took the paper from him and read it out.
