Chapter 29: The Gate Holds

Wyatt's POV

I held the dock for an hour and ten minutes, and it was the best work of my life.

That's not what I'd have said going in.

I'd have said it would be the worst, and I'd have said I was ready for it.

But I had a trailer with both doors open, backed across the foot of the ramp.

Its steel sides made a hall, and three thousand people were walking through it.

They came out of the dock door one by one, in blankets and coats and work jackets.

They passed through the trailer slowly, and quietly.

Some of them cried. Some of them touched the steel with a flat hand as they went by.

A woman in a yellow band stopped in front of me and said, "Are you him?"

"Who?"

"The cattle man," she said.

"I guess."

"Thank you," she said, and kept walking, and I didn't know what to do with my face.

It went on and on.

Up on the street the buses filled and pulled away to the base, each one heavy on its springs.
