Chapter 28: Thaw Eve

Elowen Tarn turned twenty at midnight on Thaw Eve, and the household baked her a pie.

It was an apple pie, with her name on the crust in pastry letters, and one of the letters had slid sideways.

"It says Elowem," said Ottilie.

"It says Elowen with a moustache."

"It is a statement of affection."

They were crowded in the dower house kitchen with every lamp lit and the stove roaring.

The thaw had come in earnest.

The whole county ran with water, and the eaves dripped in a long steady rattle that filled the room.

The Thaw Festival would open in the morning, three days of bells and bonfires.

The Marquis was to marry the Princess on its first day, three days earlier than anyone had planned.

Nobody mentioned it.

Tonight there was a pie.

The players had come down from the barn with a barrel of cider, and the foreman, and the blacksmith with his fiddle.

Evander sat at the table's end, in his shirtsleeves, with Elowen's satchel on his knee because she had asked him to hold it.

He looked, Calista thought, like a man who has found a room that fits.

At a quarter to midnight Elowen stood on a chair.

"I have something to say," she said, "and I would like not to be interrupted."
