Chapter 13: The Gate
Brendan's POV
I drove to Bonaventure because I did not know where else a man takes this.
We had sat in my mother's kitchen until dark, with nine boxes taped shut around us.
The bracelet lay on the table between the salt and the pepper.
Then I put Belle in the SUV and drove without choosing.
At three in the morning I found myself on the shell road under the live oaks with the headlights off.
The cemetery gates were iron, and they were chained.
I remembered those gates.
Three Bellinger men had stood in front of them when I was nineteen, and one of them had a hand on his belt.
Belle sat beside me with the bracelet closed in her fist.
I had passed it to her on the bridge, because I could not hold it and steer.
She hadn't said a word since Cuyler-Brownville, and I was grateful, and I was starting to be afraid of it.
"Say his name," I said.
"Whit," she said.
"Whit."
It was a short name, and it meant nothing to me, and it was my son's.
"Whitaker," she said. "Whitaker Boykin. He's twenty-four. He works in his stepfather's insurance office, and he's afraid of his mother."
"I saw him."
She turned her head.
"I sat at that bar," I said, "and I watched him stand up and tap his glass. I saw him say it to you in front of eighty people. He pushed his hair back with his left hand when he was done."
"Brendan."
"I looked at that boy, and I thought, weak. I thought, she's well shut of him." My voice was steady, which surprised me. "I looked right at his face. I had the same eyebrow, and I looked at it and saw nothing."
"How could you have known?"
