Chapter 26: The Empty Chair
Gaspare's POV
The cook was sitting at the kitchen table in her coat when I came in.
She had been crying, and she stood up so fast she knocked over the salt.
"Don Lanzetta, I didn't know. She said it was soup for the prisoner."
"Who said?"
"Signora Bonfiglio. She took the tray and the key at eight. She said she had your leave."
"Did she come back up?"
"No."
I looked at my wife.
Rosaria stood in the doorway in the mended green dress, with her pistol in her hand and no color in her face.
She did not say, I told you so.
She said, "She heard the north gate in the hall, and she still went down."
"Yes."
"She picked him."
"Yes."
"Of course she did," Rosaria said.
She said it very quietly, and it was the quietest thing I had ever heard her say.
I wanted to put my hand on her back.
I did not.
I had learned, in a week, that she would tell me when.
My consigliere came in with his phone against his chest.
"The old man's men have found them," he said. "At the fish market. A refrigerated truck was backing out of the yard with Placido in the cab and his wife driving."
"Where were they going?"
"The ferry to Naples. There was a suitcase of cash behind the seat, and two passports."
"Bring them to the hall."
"At dawn?"
"Now. And call every capo. Wake them."
He went.
Rosaria looked at me across the kitchen.
"What are you going to do?"
"What I should have done at the beginning."
"Which is?"
"Ask you what you want done with them."
"Not tonight," she said. "I'm tired. Tonight I'll sleep in a bed that isn't mine and think about it."
"Then that's what we do."
"And you?"
"I have something to say to the Family. It won't wait."
