Chapter 16: Ask Me
Rae's POV
I saw his boots first.
They stopped in front of the bench, wet to the ankle, and I did not lift my head.
"Gate four," Cal said. "You always pick the gate with the broken clock."
"I didn't pick it. It was the next bus."
"Move your bag."
I moved it.
He sat down on the bench, and he left one whole seat between us.
The loudspeaker said something about Wilkes-Barre.
"Lou told me what's in the bottles," he said. "He told me you didn't know. He told me about the tape."
I said nothing.
I had a paper ticket in my hand, soft from being held for two hours.
"Where are you going?"
"Philadelphia."
"To Vince."
"He has a paper for me to sign. If I sign it, he leaves the gym alone, and he leaves you alone." My voice was steadier than I expected. "I thought it was the only way to stop him from coming up your stairs."
"You thought."
"You said that last night."
"I said it badly." He put his forearms on his knees and looked at the floor. "I said a lot of things badly. I took one step backward, and I've been feeling it for six hours."
"You had every reason."
"I did." He nodded slowly. "And I was wrong to use it."
He turned his head and looked at me.
His eyes were red, and he had not shaved.
"I'll tell you what hurt," he said. "It wasn't the cooler. Lou says that was Vince, and I believe him. What hurt was that you spent nine days alone with it, and every one of those days I was standing four feet away."
