Chapter 8: Perfect Numbers

Nolan drove me to the clinic on Monday morning and parked at the far end of the lot, behind a delivery truck.

"I'll wait here," he said.

"You could come in."

"I'm the trainer of the man on the banner. I'd rather he hear I was in the building from you."

I got out. I walked past the banner with Lars's face on it.

In the waiting room, the six women looked up again.

The nurse who had called me met me at the desk. She was young and flushed, and she didn't say anything about the dress this time.

"The doctor's ready," she said. "She cleared her whole morning."

The doctor's office had a window onto the parking garage, and a diagram of a uterus pinned to the wall.

She was a brisk woman in her fifties with silver hair and reading glasses on top of her head.

"Mrs. Rudd. Sit. I'm going to tell you what I should have said two years ago."

She opened a file.

"Your numbers."

"What about them?"

"They're excellent. You have the egg reserve of a woman six or seven years younger. Your hormones are textbook. Your last four cycles, you ovulated every single time, on schedule, on the injections."

"Then why didn't it work?"

"That's the question I should have pushed harder."

She took the glasses off her head and put them on.

"Four stimulation cycles, timed intercourse. That's all we did. We never ran the insemination or the embryo work, because your husband's file contained a letter."
