Table one was by the dais, under the biggest chandelier in the Telfair Ballroom.

I sat at it in a green gown I had bought myself.

Posey sat on my left in a borrowed jacket.

Linus sat on my right in a tiny black suit and yellow rain boots, because he would not take them off.

Verity sat across from me.

Beside her sat her father, who had come in alone and asked in a gruff voice whether there was a chair.

There was.

The room was full.

Four hundred people in black tie, the same florists and caterers and shipping men and Foundation donors.

Table nineteen stood by the kitchen doors where it had always been.

The tug supply man sat at it, and he caught my eye and lifted his glass.

I lifted mine back.

It held sparkling water, and I had never wanted wine less.

The band stopped, and the lights lowered a notch.

At the head table, in a wheelchair with a blanket over her knees and her silver hair carefully pinned, Rosamund Beaufain sat.

Her good hand rested on her cane.

She did not rise.

She tapped the microphone twice with a knuckle, and the room went quiet for her as it always had.

"Good evening, friends of the Foundation."

Her voice dragged a little on the consonants.

Nobody pretended not to notice, and nobody looked away.
