Chapter 11: Sunday
Sunday dinner had twelve at the table and two cameras in the hallway that were supposedly there for the family album.
Wenxin had told Haoran about the proxy by phone on Saturday night, in one flat paragraph.
He had said only, "Sit in your usual chair. Whatever I do, don't look surprised."
So she sat.
The board members and their wives filled the long table in silk and good suits. Madam presided from the head in a dress the color of old jade.
Xiaotong sat across from her, bright and a little nervous, and mouthed, You okay?
Wenxin smiled back. She was an actress. She was fine.
Haoran came in last, and every head at the table turned to him.
He crossed to the high carved chair and did not sit.
"Haoran," Madam said, warmly. "Your brother's seat."
"Yes," Haoran said. "In a moment."
He pulled out the carved chair beside Wenxin's, empty for three years, and sat in it.
Then he did what he had not done in three years.
He reached across the tablecloth in full view of twelve guests and took her left hand, with the ring she wore for Madam's table back on it, and held it on the white linen.
Nobody breathed.
A wife at the far end dropped a chopstick.
"The rule in this house has always been that I sit for my brother," Haoran said, pleasantly. "I thought I'd sit in it as myself for one night."
Madam's smile did not move.
Wenxin kept her face quiet. It was the hardest scene she had ever played.
His thumb stroked once across her knuckles, where nobody but she could feel it.
"How modern," Madam said at last. "Wenxin, dear, the soup."
