Chapter 9: What the Four Know
On Monday morning Roan put his phone on speaker in the wharf office and dialed a number in Connecticut.
I sat on the edge of his desk with my mother's hummingbird in my fist.
A woman answered on the fourth ring.
"Office of the Associate Dean of Admissions."
"My name is Sutton Landry," I said, before Roan could speak. "Somebody forged my signature on a withdrawal form on Friday night. I didn't ask for it. I'd like my seat back."
There was a pause.
"Ms. Landry," the woman said carefully, "we have a signed form from your parent, and an enrollment deposit from another student has been accepted against the place."
"The other student is my half-sister," I said. "My stepmother paid four hundred thousand dollars to a Hartwell fund to buy her a place, and it didn't work. They stole my place the only way left."
The line went so quiet I could hear a clock ticking on her end.
"I'm going to write down what you just said," the woman said. "And I'm going to ask you to send me, today, a photograph of your driver's license and a sentence in your own handwriting. Then I'm going to put a hold on the reassignment. I can't promise more than the hold."
"That's all I need today."
"Ms. Landry."
"Yes?"
"I read your essay," she said. "About the desk. I'd be sorry to lose it."
She hung up.
I sat with my phone in my lap and my eyes stinging.
Roan took my hand and kissed my knuckles, once, without a word.
"Come on," he said. "I want to show you something."
He walked me out onto the wharf.
It was a gray, bright morning, and the cranes stood over the water.
Men in orange vests crossed the yard with pallets and forklifts, and as we passed, every one of them nodded.
"Morning, Roan."
"Morning, Mrs. Draper."
"Landry," I said, over my shoulder, out of habit.
