Chapter 13: Recused

He sat.

The chief of surgery looked down the table at me over his reading glasses and waited.

I had worded it in the elevator, and it came out whole.

"For the record," I said, "Dr. Ellery and I have a personal history, and I am recused from any vote on his candidacy."

"So noted," said Arthur, and wrote it down.

Graham watched me the whole time Arthur's pen moved.

Then he opened his folder, looked at the first page, and closed it again.

"I had twenty minutes on trauma outcomes," he said. "I'd like to spend ten of them on a letter, if the board allows."

The chief slid a page across the table.

"You've seen this?"

"No, sir."

The chief read him one paragraph aloud, the paragraph about the crash.

Graham's face did not move.

"Part of it is true," he said. "I was driving. I'll answer the rest in writing by Friday, with documents, and I'd ask the board to hold the letter until it has read them."

"And this line about the woman with no standing?"

"I don't know who that's meant to be."

He was looking at me when he said it.

"Whoever it is, she has more standing than I do. I'd like that sentence struck."

"Struck," Arthur said, and drew a line.

The chief turned a page.

"What would you do with the Institute's first year, Doctor?"

"I'd build it so a night nurse who says something is wrong is never told she's sulking."
