Chapter 14: The Garage
I handed the unit to the day attending at half past nine and walked out of Lakeview in my wool coat with my braid coming loose.
Roderick had said he would wait for me in the staff garage.
I took the stairs down, Stairwell B, and I did not look at the landing.
His truck sat on level two with a fresh dent in the fender and a county tow tag hanging from the mirror.
The plow driver's cousin had winched it out of the ditch at exit 54 an hour ago, and left the keys at security.
Roderick was behind the wheel with the engine running and the heater on.
I climbed into the back seat of the crew cab and shut the door, because the front seat would have put me too close to him and I wanted to see his face.
He turned around and looked at me over the headrest.
"Your phone's on," he said.
"It's on."
It had been buzzing in my pocket since the lobby.
Thirty-one missed calls from Bram, and the thread from Sabine, eleven months long, arriving in a pile.
I put it face down on the seat.
"Thank you for last night," I said. "I mean all of it. The plow, and the stairwell, and standing at the head of that bed."
"Don't thank me yet."
His voice was wrong.
He took off his glasses and held them in his hand, and I saw his knuckles go pale.
"I have to tell you something," Roderick said. "I should have told you at midnight. I couldn't make my mouth do it."
"Tell me."
"In October I drove home from a night shift at seven in the morning. I came down Ridge Road in Lackawanna."
I waited.
"There was a black Audi parked outside a brick building. Three stories, a green door. I knew the car. I'd seen it in the doctors' lot at two parties, and I knew whose it was."
