Chapter 17: The Proxy

Nolan's POV

At eleven the board chair asked me to come to his office alone.

Leah was in the next room with Dolores, going over her speech.

She had not smiled that morning without looking at me first.

I was not used to being looked at that way.

The chair shut the door.

"Mr. Corbin, I'll be direct. Your brother is finished. The only question is who runs the company on Monday."

"Leah's stake is twenty-five percent."

"And yours is thirty." He leaned on the desk. "Together that is fifty-five. If you vote your own shares, the board will name you chief executive. Your father built this place for you as much as for him."

I said nothing.

"You'd be good at it," the chair added. "You were good at it at twenty-eight."

That was the part that hurt.

I had loved the company once. I had left it because Preston stood in the middle of it, and I could not breathe.

"Give me the form," I said.

"Which form?"

"The one that lets me vote my shares through someone else."

The chair stared at me.

"A proxy," he said slowly. "To whom?"

"Leah Sutherland."

"You'd hand her control of your father's life's work."

"I'd hand it to the person who put eighty thousand dollars of her father's house into it when nobody else would."

He pulled a sheet from a drawer and slid it across.

I signed it before I could argue with myself.
