Chapter 9: The Vote
Nolan's POV
Friday at nine the boardroom of Corbin Freight was cold and bright, and my brother had put me at the foot of the table.
Nine directors sat along the sides. The chair of the board sat on the left with his hands folded.
Preston sat at the head.
He had not shaved well. A small nick marked his jaw.
I had not seen him nervous in thirty-eight years, and he was nervous now.
"Item one," said the board's lawyer. "A motion to declare the voting shares of Nolan Corbin abandoned under section nine of the shareholder agreement, for failure to exercise them in ten years."
"I'm here," I said. "I'm exercising them."
"Too late," Preston said without looking at me.
"The agreement says you have to give thirty days' notice."
"The agreement says a lot of things. The board has a quorum."
At the back of the room the door opened and closed.
I looked up.
Leah slid into a chair along the wall with her coat still on. Dolores sat beside her with a leather folder in her lap.
She was in navy, with her hair pulled back and her chin level.
She did not look at me.
Something moved in my chest that had no business moving in a meeting.
She had been in my arms at dawn, warm and sleepy, saying my old name.
I turned my eyes back to the table.
My mother had given Leah a key yesterday and told her to come on Sunday, without me.
I did not know what was in that desk, and it sat in my head through the whole meeting.
