Chapter 13: Ash
The chair of the Moot came down the hall steps with his staff in his fist and his face dark.
"Beta Quillon, you will hand that page to my clerk."
"Of course, Chair," Oswin said.
He turned away from the clerk and walked to the nearest cookfire.
"It's a forgery in a dead man's hand," he said, loud enough for the whole field. "The Fen means to read it to a hundred wolves as truth. Even if the Moot never believes it, it will have heard it."
"Beta!"
Oswin opened his fingers.
The page dropped into the coals and the black wax bubbled.
I screamed and ran.
Two Kestrel wolves caught me by the arms before I reached it.
Corwin lunged and got a boot in the shin of one and an elbow in the ribs of another, and then he doubled over, gasping, because his own ribs were cracked.
I watched my father's cramped hand curl brown and black, and the edge go up in a thin yellow flame.
It was gone in the time it takes to say it.
"There," Oswin said, and brushed ash from his glove. "Now nobody has to be shamed."
The field stayed silent.
A hundred wolves looked at the fire, and then at me.
I could see what they were thinking. Nobody could check a burned page.
"Chair of the Moot," I said, and my voice shook. "The heir of the Fen asks to be heard."
"Child, the page is ash."
"I have it by heart."
The wolves holding me looked at each other and let go.
I stepped up to the fire and said it.
I gave them every line, from the match to the east door to the last sentence, "Prove it for me," and I left nothing out.
