Chapter 4: The Gate

I walked down the drive to the gate by myself.

Benedict came three steps behind me and stopped at the hedge.

I understood he would stay there unless I asked.

Cade stood at the iron bars with his hands in his pockets and his eyes red.

Behind him a white car sat at the curb with its windows down, and four phones stuck out of them.

His mother stood beside him in a cream suit with a pearl brooch.

"Hallie, dear," Claudia said, and reached through the bars to pat my arm.

I stepped back.

Her hand stayed in the air for a second, and then she folded it into the other.

"We're not angry," she said. "Cade is heartbroken, of course. But we all understand. You were upset. You've been under such strain."

"I wasn't upset," I said.

"The marriage can be undone. A judge will see you were not yourself. Come home, and we will say no more about it."

"Claudia, you were in the doorway on our anniversary," I said. "You watched Cade leave me at that table for a poker game."

"Boys need their nights, dear."

"You told me to be a good sport."

"And you were," Claudia said warmly. "That's why we love you."

Cade tried a smile.

"Babe, come on. You made your point. Everyone's seen it. Now stop."

"I haven't made a point," I said. "I got married."

"To a man who didn't even show up to your dinner three years ago."

I said nothing.

Cade saw he'd hit something, and his smile grew.

"Yeah. I know all about it. You cried on my shoulder for a month. He didn't want you then, Hallie. He doesn't want you now. He wants your grandfather's name on a piece of paper."

Behind me, Benedict did not move.
