Chapter 20: The Yard
At noon the yard was full.
Eighty members stood among the picnic tables with their wives and prospects and kids, and nobody was eating.
Gus waited on the porch with a manila folder.
He had put on his best leather vest, and the president's patch was clean on the left breast.
I walked in with Boone on one side of me and Tawny on the other, and Mags behind us with her kitchen shears in her apron pocket.
The crowd opened to let us through.
"Thank you for coming, all of you," Gus said. "This is hard. I'm going to say what I know, and then you decide."
He lifted the folder.
"This is a signed statement from Rook Hanley of the Pale Ravens."
He let it hang a moment.
"It says Hallie Mercer and her husband sold the Tulsa towing contracts to the Ravens for cash, through Tawny Pratt. It says I found out and tried to stop it."
A sound went through the yard.
"I've known it for weeks. I kept quiet because I love these two like my own children."
He shook his head.
"But I won't stand by while a bookkeeper empties the club and calls me the thief."
He held the page up so the nearest rows could see.
It had a signature at the bottom and nobody could read it from where they stood.
Every face turned to me.
I had stood in front of eighty people once before, with a receipt in my hand.
This time I knew what he was doing.
"May I answer, Gus?" I asked.
"Of course, honey."
I walked to the long table where the cookout's speaker still sat.
It was the same black PA system with the same long cord.
