Chapter 5: Twelve Bikes
Friday was payroll, so the whole club was in the lot by ten.
Sixty-one people lined up outside the clubhouse door for a paper envelope, because Gus liked to hand them out himself.
I stood at the card table with the signed checks and a clipboard, and I called names.
I read each name aloud, handed over each envelope and met every eye.
Nobody would let a check go without thanking me.
A prospect with a baby on his hip squeezed my hand and could not say anything.
I told myself the freeze had been worth it for that alone.
Boone stood against the far wall with his arms folded, in his vest, with the VP patch still on.
He had not tried to come near me.
He kept his eyes on the lot, and I caught myself looking at his forearms, the old tattoos running down into his wrists, and I turned a page on my clipboard too hard.
At ten-twenty, the rumble started.
It came from the county road first, low, and then it split into separate engines.
Everybody in the lot turned.
Twelve motorcycles came up the gravel in two lines and stopped at the gate.
Their vests had a black bird on the back with its wings spread.
The Pale Ravens.
I had never seen one on our land. The two clubs had a treaty, and the treaty said they stayed off each other's dirt.
The man in the front line cut his engine and took off his helmet.
He was lean and wiry, with a shaved head and a grey goatee, and he got off his bike slowly.
