Chapter 6: A Patch of Her Own

Rook did not take his sister home that morning.

He looked at me for a long moment, at the clipboard and the sixty-one people behind me, and he smiled.

"Keep her warm, Mrs. Mercer," he said, and swung back onto his bike.

Twelve engines turned over together.

When the dust settled, Mags had already taken Tawny by the elbow and walked her into the kitchen, and Boone had put himself in the kitchen doorway with his arms crossed.

Nobody told him to.

I left the checks with the sergeant at arms and walked to the president's office.

Gus's office was at the back of the clubhouse, a small room with a window unit and a framed photo of the founders on a motorcycle in 1989.

He was at his desk with his glasses on and a cup of coffee going cold.

"Shut the door, honey," he said.

That was what Mags had said, and it made me stop for half a second.

I shut it.

"You embarrassed him in front of his own club," Gus said. "That was a great deal of nerve."

"You let a rival president walk onto our land."

"I let him walk onto it because the alternative was a fight in front of sixty families." He rubbed his eyes. "Sit."

I stayed standing.

"Rook told you the Tuesday deal's off if she doesn't go home," I said. "What is the Tuesday deal?"

Gus did not blink.

"You heard that?"

"I was ten feet away."

He sighed and leaned back, and the old chair creaked.

"Red Dirt Towing has two Tulsa contracts that the Ravens have been fighting us for since before you married Boone," Gus said. "For two years I've been quietly working out a split. Tuesday is the day we meet. That's all. It's a legal arrangement, and I didn't tell you because it isn't finished, and because Rook is a liar who will say whatever buys him an hour."
