Chapter 22: The Night Shift

By the next morning the photo was on the local news.

An anchor read Holden's statement over it.

"I've learned the nurse who will testify in my case has been in a relationship with my wife. I'm heartbroken, and I have questions about what really happened that night."

He needed the nurse to be my lover, so nothing the nurse said would count.

At noon Gina called me from her stairwell.

"Deenie. They put him on leave."

I sat up on the couch.

"Abe?"

"Administration. Pending a review of his conduct with a patient. He's off the schedule till they decide."

"The night shift is losing its mind. The charge nurse said a word on the unit phone I've only ever said in traffic."

I didn't call Abe.

I still couldn't look at him.

But I knew exactly when the night shift started.

At ten to seven I walked onto the labor and delivery floor of the county hospital.

The last time I'd been on it, I was on a gurney.

The day shift was handing off at the nurses' station, a dozen of them in navy scrubs with coffee and clipboards.
