Chapter 14: The Woman Who Carried the Slip
"Who carried it?" I said.
The nurse pulled her coat tighter.
"Not Neil Garner," she said. "He never set foot on our floor that night."
"Then who?"
"A girl. Twenty, maybe. She had a gray coat and a soft voice, and she wouldn't look at me."
My stomach turned over.
"What did she say?"
"She said she came from Mr. Garner's office with an urgent transfer." The nurse's mouth shook. "She put a pink slip on my desk and said the cardiac team was needed in a private suite right now."
"And you let her."
"I argued with her."
"You argued."
"I said, I have a man in bed six who is going down." She wiped her eyes with the back of her glove. "The charge nurse took the slip out of my hand. She said the order came from the donor family, and we do not refuse the donor family."
"The Garners."
"Yes."
"Who was the girl?"
"I didn't know her name that night."
"And now?"
The nurse opened her purse.
She took out a folded square of yellow paper and held it up under the lamp.
"Those slips come in three colors," she said. "The pink goes to the unit. The white goes to administration. The yellow stays with whoever wrote the transfer."
"You kept the yellow."
"I took it out of the charge nurse's tray three days later. I knew something was wrong with it."
I took the paper.
The writing was cramped and fast.
Cardiac team reassigned. Private consult, M. Garner.
Under it, in different ink, someone had printed the name of the person who delivered it.
