Chapter 6: Room 1104

Nathaniel's POV

My office on the fourteenth floor of the Sterne looked straight across Boylston at the Holloway Grand's front doors.

I had chosen it for that view four years ago.

On Day 3, at ten at night, I watched a woman in a cream coat cross the street with a pink bakery box in one hand and her bandaged left hand held up at her shoulder.

I had told myself I would not go down to meet her.

I was in the lobby before the doors finished opening.

"Interest," Sylvie said, and put the box in my hands. "On forty dollars. Eat one."

"I don't eat sugar at night."

"Eat one."

I ate one.

It was a lemon tart with a burnt-sugar top, and it was the best thing I had put in my mouth in a year.

"Well?" she said.

"It's a good thing you aren't in my kitchen," I said. "I'd never fire you, and I'd go broke."

She almost smiled.

She had been crying earlier in the day, or she had been furious enough to look it, and she held her chin high.

"I read about the lease on your phone," I said, because I needed to say something. "Your friend's post. Four hundred thousand views."

"Dee posted the bet sheet."

"I know."

"Is that okay? You're all over it. 'Man in charcoal coat pays cab.'"
