Chapter 9: Jealous

Harrison looked at the flour on my face, and the flour on Nathaniel, and then he smiled.

It was his easy smile.

It went all the way up to his eyes, and that was what frightened me.

"Well," he said. "Look at that."

Dee came in through the back door with her phone already up, held low against her hip, red light on.

I saw it.

Harrison did not.

"Harrison," I said. "What are you doing here?"

"Bringing my wife flowers." He set the roses on the counter, and flour puffed up around the stems. "These are your mother's. I remembered."

"I'm not your wife this week."

"Em." He laughed. "You're being so good at this. Look at you. You even found someone to be jealous of me with." He turned, and held out his hand across the flour to Nathaniel. "Sterne. Good to see you. I hope she's treating you well. She'll cry when you're done with her, but she'll come home."

Nathaniel did not take the hand.

"Say that to her face," he said.

"I just did." Harrison dropped the hand and shrugged. "It's a game with us. She gets jealous, I make her jealous, she loves me more. Four years. Ask her."

"Is that true?" Nathaniel said to me.

I found my voice somewhere under my ribs.

"It was true," I said. "I believed it."

"You don't believe it now?"
