Chapter 23: Dinner at the Boathouse

Carlton Fairbanks arrived at the boathouse at six on Saturday with nothing in his hands.

He stood on the dock in his good overcoat and looked down at his empty palms.

"I did not bring wine," he said. "I did not bring flowers, or a pie, or a check. I'm told that's correct."

"That's correct," Eli said from the doorway.

"I almost brought a casserole dish," Carlton said. "I put it back."

"Thank you."

"It was very difficult."

Laurence, behind Eli, made a noise into his sleeve.

The boathouse had been scrubbed and the hole in the roof covered with a tarp.

A wooden crate stood in the middle of the floor with a clean sheet over it.

Three mismatched chairs sat around it, and a candle burned in a jar.

Carlton looked at the crate for a long moment.

Then he took off his overcoat, hung it on a nail, and sat down on a chair that creaked under him.

"This is very nice," he said, and he sounded as though he meant it.

Eli served a beef stew that he had been cooking since noon.
