Chapter 9: Daniel Price

Lucas used the kitchen landline on Monday morning while Kevin was at the lot.

The number he called was one he'd had in his phone for two years and never used.

A woman answered on the second ring. "Price Pictures."

"Is Daniel in?"

"Who's calling."

"Lucas Reed."

There was a pause on the line. Then a click.

"Daniel Price."

"Daniel. It's Lucas Reed."

"I know who it is."

There was a beat.

"I've been waiting for this call for about three weeks," Daniel said.

"You don't know me."

"I know you got blacklisted in April for something that wasn't your fault."

Lucas stood in the kitchen with the cord wrapped around his finger.

"Can we meet."

"Name the place."

Abbot Kinney at eleven. A coffee shop with a patio and a wall of plants.

Lucas got there first and took a table at the back with his back to the wall.

He'd taken the bus. He'd walked the last four blocks.

He had one page folded twice in his jacket pocket.

Daniel Price came in ten minutes late.

Camel sport coat over a cream sweater, black glasses, auburn hair cropped close.

He shook Lucas's hand and sat down and ordered nothing.

"You look like hell," Daniel said.

"Thanks."

"How's your brother."

"Walking. He walked a mile on Sunday."

"Good. That's good."

Daniel took his glasses off and cleaned them on his sweater.

"I'm going to be straight with you, because I don't have time to be anything else."
