Chapter 15: Byron's POV
Byron's POV
Saturday is the busiest day at the cider stand, and I had forty people in line when my mother's car came up the gravel.
I was pouring a half gallon for a woman with two boys.
Lacey was inside the barn with Poppy, because the wind had turned cold.
The car stopped across the end of the stand, so nobody could get past it.
My mother got out in her camel coat, and her new attorney got out behind her with a leather folder.
The old attorney had quit on Wednesday.
"Byron," she said. "I thought we should talk where you're comfortable."
"I'm working, Mother."
"Then I'll wait."
She did not wait.
She walked up to the counter and stood beside the register, in front of every customer, with her gloves on.
"It's a very simple offer," she said. "I'd like you to hear it."
I handed the woman her jug.
The boys stared at my mother, and a man behind them took out his phone.
"I'll forgive the note," she said. "All of it, forty acres, free and clear, with my thanks for the last eleven years of labor."
"What do you want?"
"A signature." She nodded at the attorney, who opened the folder. "The voting shares in Angell Orchards were left to the first grandchild. They stay in my care as trustee. You sign that you will never claim her, and Lacey and the baby come to the house."
"And I keep the trees."
"You keep the trees. You always liked trees more than people."
I looked at the paper on the counter.
It was four pages.
On the last one, a yellow flag sat on the line where I was supposed to sign.
