Chapter 10: The King's Ring

They carried my father to his own bed, and the Regent's physician tried to push everyone out of the room.

Torin put one hand on the man's chest and moved him into the corridor without a word.

Then he shut the door and stood against it.

The King lay on a huge old four-poster with the curtains open, and he looked small in it.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and held his hand.

It was cold and light.

"Don't cry," Edmund said. "I'm too tired to be comforting."

"I'm not crying."

"You are, a little. Your mother did it exactly like that. Quietly, with her chin up."

I laughed, and the tears came faster.

"Listen," he said. "Torin. Take the cup on the table."

Torin crossed the room, took the silver cup from the nightstand, and sniffed it.

His face went hard.

"Wolf's-tongue," he said. "In the evening draught."

"My brother's physician pours it every night." The King closed his eyes. "I've known for two years, and I drank it, so he'd stay patient while I looked for you. I thought I had more time than I did."

"Father..."

"Say it again."

"Father."

He smiled.

"I never learned what your mother did to hide you," he said. "She sent a letter once, the week before she died, with no return address. It said only: When she is let go, she'll wake. Trust the Captain's boy."

I looked at Torin.

He had gone very still.

"I was seven," he said. "My father had told me to find you. I didn't know she meant me."

"She meant you," Edmund said. "She was always three moves ahead of everyone."

He worked a heavy gold ring off his finger with great effort, and pressed it into my palm.
