Chapter 12: The Mark

The Seer's fingers were very cold.

She pressed them against the pale place on my neck, and her white eyes rolled up.

The whole hall waited.

"There is no Holt here," she said.

Her voice was thin and dry, and it carried to the back of the room.

"Never was. This mark was woven."

"Woven?" I said.

"Tied on with white thread and a mother's blood when you were one year old. A false bond, shaped like a real one. It was meant to burn once, on the night you met the one it showed you. It was meant to hold until you were let go."

I couldn't speak.

I remembered the night I met Jasper, at a pack gathering the autumn I turned twenty-two.

I remembered the hot flare on my neck, and his hand reaching out, and his saying that it was fate.

"The Alpha felt nothing when he spoke the rejection," the Seer went on. "Because there was nothing on his side to tear. He was a shelter, child. A roof. She chose a house that would take you in, and she made it look like a home."

"My mother did this?" I whispered.

"A queen did it. Your mother, with her own hands, in her own blood. She tied it so well that even you believed it."

The Regent's face had gone slack.
