Chapter 29: The Root
I read it on my knees in the ash, with the glasshouse falling in behind me.
The paper was soft and brown at the folds.
My mother's hand slanted hard to the right.

I was crying so hard I could not see the last line.
Torin knelt and held the box while I wiped my face on my sleeve.
"What does it say?" he asked softly.
"It says what Rhoda said." I laughed, shakily. "It says you can't be in the river."
"I know."
"It also says how."
I folded the page and put it inside my coat, over my heart.
Nine days later, the Wolf Moon came up over the Skagit, full and white.
Two hundred and eighty-eight wolves stood on the Black Fir bank, shoulder to shoulder, in their coats.
On the Ironwood side, the other pack stood just as quietly.
I walked down the gravel in a plain white shirt.
I walked the way my father walked to work, with my hands loose.
Torin stood on the bank at the top of the slope with a baby in each arm.
The housekeeper had wrapped them for the cold.
