Chapter 7: Repossessed

I went back to work on Tuesday, because I could not stand another day in a one-room gatehouse listening to the wind.

The hospice had a place for everything, and none of it was loud.

The dressings on my palms had come down to a thin film, and the nurse manager said she would give me light duty.

I spent six hours sitting with an old man who wanted to talk about his dead wife's tomatoes.

It was the best six hours I'd had in two weeks.

At seven I walked out to the parking lot with a thermos in my hand, still wearing Jude's flight jacket over my scrubs, because I had never given it back.

My car was gone.

The space was empty, and there was a long oil stain where it had been.

I stood looking at the stain.

Behind me the automatic doors slid open, and half of the evening shift came out with their coats on, going home.

A flatbed tow truck sat idling at the end of the row.

My car was on the back of it, with its tires chained.

"That's mine," I said, loudly enough for the whole lot to hear.

A man in a company hoodie climbed down from the cab with a clipboard.

"Riordan?"

"Yes."

"Vehicle's registered to Hollenbeck Air. We have a recovery order."

"The settlement gave me that car."

"The settlement says 'a car,'" he said, looking at the clipboard. "It doesn't say this one."

Someone behind me whispered, "Oh my God, that's the nurse from the church video."

I turned around.

My coworkers stood in a half circle on the pavement, and nobody was meeting my eye.

Somebody had a phone up.

I stood there in a stranger's jacket and watched my own car get dragged up the street on its chains.
