Chapter 17: Roux

Brianna was sitting on the kitchen counter of Cosimo's tower at six in the morning, eating dry cereal out of the box.

"I'm sorry," she said, when she saw me. "I'm not allowed to be hungry at normal times anymore."

"Eat."

I took the box out of her hand, poured it into a bowl, and put milk on it.

She watched me do it and didn't say anything.

"I want to ask you something," she said. "And you can say no."

"All right."

"I need somewhere to be. After. I can't go back to my mother's. She thinks Benton is a saint." Brianna twisted the hem of her sweater. "I don't have a job. I don't have an apartment. I have eleven voicemails and a baby."

"You have more than that."

"Do I?"

"You have the voicemails, and you're the only one who can say what Benton said in your bed."

Her eyes went wide.

"I thought you'd hate that. I thought you'd rather I stayed quiet."

"I'd rather you were honest," I said. "Sit down. Properly, in a chair."

She slid off the counter and sat.

I sat across from her.

I had practiced the next part in the shower, and now I found I didn't need to.

"I'm going to give you a bed," I said. "You can have this one as long as you need it, and Rosemary will help you find work, and I'll pay for the doctor."

"Why?"

"Because the baby didn't do anything to me."

Brianna started to cry again, quietly, into the cereal.

"Here is the other part," I said. "I won't lie to you. When it comes out, and it's going to, I will tell people what you did. You wore my grandmother's pearls. You sent me that video from my bed. I'm not going to leave either one out."
