Chapter 8: Ten Weeks
Yvette drove to the hospital with one hand on the wheel and the other pressed over mine on my stomach.
"Breathe," she said. "In through the nose."
"I am breathing."
"In through the nose. Out slow. You're going to tell me when you start feeling dizzy."
"I'm already dizzy."
"Great. That's the plan, then."
She ran a yellow light and I was glad.
Dalton's car had pulled out of the driveway behind us.
At the second intersection it turned the other way.
I did not see where it went.
At the emergency desk a nurse wheeled me straight through the doors and into a curtained bay.
A doctor with a gray ponytail pressed cold gel on my stomach and slid a wand across it.
The screen filled with gray static, and then with a small flickering shape.
"There," the doctor said. "That's your baby's heartbeat."
I started to cry.
I could not help it.
The sound filled the bay, quick and steady, a hundred and sixty beats a minute, and I had not known until that moment how hard I had been holding my breath.
"Everything looks fine," the doctor said gently. "You have a small bleed near the placenta. It's common, and it's usually stress. Do you have a lot of stress right now?"
Yvette made a sound from the corner that was almost a laugh.
"A moderate amount," I said.
"Rest for two days. No lifting, no arguing, no running to open houses." The doctor looked at me over her glasses. "I mean it."
"I'll try."
"Try harder."
She left, and Yvette pulled the curtain back to see who was in the hallway.
