Chapter 6: What Kristy Said

I closed my hand around the phone.

Brett came the rest of the way up the ladder and crouched under the rafters, a few feet away.

"I figured you tossed that thing years ago," he said.

"You figured wrong."

"Listen to me," Brett said, very quietly. "I heard about the car. I'm sorry. Scott's an idiot about that necklace, everybody knows it."

"He left me in a fire."

"And you're mad. I get it. So you divorce him, fine. You take your little box and you go." He nodded at the phone. "But that stays in the box."

"Or what?"

"Or nothing. I'm asking you." He tried the smile. It didn't hold. "You know what's on there would kill Scott. It would kill Joey. Is that what you want? You want that kid to grow up knowing?"

"He's growing up thinking I killed her."

"Better you than her. You can take it. You've been taking it for three years."

He reached out, slowly.

"Let me hold on to it for you."

"Robin?"

Cal's voice came up from the upstairs hall.

"You all right up there? It's hot as a furnace."

Brett's hand stopped.

He looked down through the hatch at Cal's head and shoulders.

"Who's that?"

"The man who pulled me out of the car," I said. "Since nobody in this family did."

Brett sat back on his heels.

"Keep it in the box," he said again. "I mean it, Robin."

Cal came halfway up the ladder and took the box from me.

Then he helped me down, one rung at a time.

Brett stayed in the attic.

On the front step, Scott's mother had refilled her iced tea.

She watched Cal load twenty-two trash bags into the bed of his pickup.

When he was done, she called across the lawn to the neighbor at the mailbox.

"It's all right. She's leaving."
