Chapter 17: Her Terms
Fred gave me the key to the crew room above the hangar office the night I left the penthouse, and it was the only place I had slept without a nurse nearby.
Hayes drove me there from Malibu with both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road.
Neither of us spoke for forty minutes.
He parked behind the hangar and came around to open my door, because I still couldn't work the handle.
"Goodnight, Lena," he said.
He turned to go.
I had not planned the next thing I said.
"Stay."
He stopped with his back to me.
"I want to be clear," I said. "This isn't forgiveness."
"I know."
"It's not a deal and it's not a reward. I want you in the room tonight, and I want it my way."
He turned around slowly.
His gray eyes were very dark in the light from the hangar door.
"Tell me your way."
"You don't talk unless I ask you something. You don't touch me until I say. And you don't stop until I say."
"Yes."
"Say it."
"I'll do everything you tell me," he said, "and nothing else."
I climbed the outside stairs, and he followed one step behind.
The crew room had a narrow bed, a sink and one lamp.
I closed the door and stood with my back against it.
He stood in the middle of the floor with his hands hanging open.
I had spent eleven days wanting to hit him, and I had spent two years wanting him to look at me the way he was looking at me now.
"Take your jacket off," I said.
He took it off.
"The shirt."
He undid the buttons one at a time, and his hands were not quite steady.
He had a wide chest and broad shoulders, with a pale scar under his ribs from some old accident I had never asked about.
I crossed the room and put my wrapped palm flat on it.
His heart was slamming.
