Chapter 16: Say It

I walked down the drive with half the ridge behind me.

Nobody told me to stop, and nobody went back inside.

Dalton got out of the SUV when I reached the gate.

He had shaved, and his shirt was pressed, and under his eyes the skin had gone dark.

"Han."

"You had him arrested."

"The company did." He spread his hands. "I told the lawyer to stand down. He doesn't listen to me anymore, with Piper's husband breathing down our necks. But I can fix it."

"Can you."

"One phone call. The charge goes away by noon." He glanced at the neighbors lined along the fence, and lowered his voice. "You don't need the tape anymore, Hannah. You're mine. I'm your husband. Come Saturday, stand up, say the grief confused your memory of the timing, and I'll make this go away. The tape, the papers, the supervisors. All of it."

"My price," I said.

"Yes."

"Then here it is." I stepped closer, close enough to see that his hands weren't steady. "I want you to say a sentence out loud."

"Han."

"I want to hear: I sent the helicopter away, and your grandmother died."

His face went smooth.

"That's not accurate."

"Say it."

"That's a legal statement. I can't say that. The lawyers would never."

"Then say you're sorry."

"I am sorry." He said it easily, in his whole calm sentences. "I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sorry for how this has unfolded."

"No."

"I'm sorry you're hurting."

"That's not what I asked for."
