Chapter 13: Thirteen Chairs
"Where did you get this one?" Rett said, though he knew the answer.
His voice did not sound like his own.
"You delivered it," Ward said from the door. "In the back of a truck, wrapped in a quilt."
"I remember the quilt."
"I kept the quilt."
Rett did not turn around.
He was looking at the dished seat.
A dark patch showed where a human hand had rested a thousand times on a chair that had no arms.
"It's been used," he said.
"Yes," Ward said.
"Every day."
"Most days," Ward said.
"Show me the rest."
They went through the house slowly.
The long dining room on the right held the walnut table, Rett's second design, with eight chairs drawn up to it.
A coffee ring marked one end.
At the other sat a stack of papers, a pair of reading glasses, and a green-shaded lamp.
The nearest chair was pushed back as if someone had risen that morning.
Rett put his hand on the table.
It was warm from the sun in the window.
In the library, the low reading chair with the cantilevered back sat before a fireplace, its cushion crushed and soft.
