Chapter 19: His Name
"Not that bed," Rett said. "The other one."
"Which other one?"
"The one you couldn't sleep in."
Ward stopped on the landing with his hand on the banister.
It was nine at night, and the house on Legare Street was quiet around them, lit by a single lamp in the hall.
Downstairs the rocker stood in its square of blue tape by the back window, cured enough to sit and not yet sat in.
They had carried it in together, one at each end, through the green door.
Rett had set it down and not looked at it again.
"It's in the guest room," Ward said.
"I know where it is."
"It's only a bed frame."
"It's mine," Rett said. "I want to sleep in it."
Ward looked at him for a long moment.
Then he turned and went down the stairs, and Rett followed.
The guest room was at the back of the house, small and square, with a window onto the garden.
The bed filled most of it.
It was made of cherry, with four turned posts and a low headboard carved in a pattern of leaves.
Rett had spent a month on the leaves.
The bed had been made up with a plain white sheet and no pillows.
Nobody had slept in it.
Rett laid a hand on the nearest post.
It was smooth and cool and faintly dusty.
"I made this the winter before she got sick," he said.
"I used to sit on the edge and think about who'd lie in it."
"I didn't deserve it," Ward said.
"You kept it clean."
"I dusted it on Sundays," Ward said.
Rett turned and kissed him.
It was soft, first, and careful.
He felt Ward's hands settle on his waist, light, as if they might be sent away.
He took one of them and put it under his shirt, against the skin.
"Touch me," Rett said. "Anywhere. You never have to ask again."
