Chapter 16: The Fitting
The fitting was in a bridal salon on Madison Avenue, with white carpet and champagne nobody was drinking.
Colette had rented the whole floor.
Three people with cameras stood in the corners, and a fourth held a light on a pole.
"Allegra!" Colette cried, and ran at me across the carpet. "You came. Everyone, she came!"
Four women in blush satin robes turned and applauded.
I knew two of them from college.
Neither of them looked me in the eye.
"Let me see the dress," Colette said. "Did you bring it? Try it on, try it on, I can't wait."
I handed the garment bag to the attendant.
Colette's cameras followed it into the fitting room, and then they followed me.
I came out four minutes later.
The champagne beads clicked when I walked.
The fringe swung at the middle of my thighs, and the hem stopped a hand's width above my knees.
The room went quiet.
"Oh no," Colette said.
She put both hands to her mouth.
Her eyes were already wet.
"Oh, Allegra. I think the shop sent the wrong one. That's a theme dress. It's for the Twenties party."
One of the camera operators lifted a hand and then pretended not to look at the monitor.
"It's fine," I said.
"I'm so sorry, I'll call them right now," she said.
"It's fine, Colette. I've worn it before."
She stopped.
I walked to the center of the room, where the light was best, and I turned once so the fringe swung.
"Senior spring," I said. "The Hartwell charity ball, black tie, six hundred guests. A friend told me the dress code was beads and fringe. Her name was Colette."
