Chapter 5: The Freeze

My phone buzzed in my hand.

It was Tobias.

Colette wanted sushi, so I took your car.

A second text came in under it.

Today was enough of a lesson. Go home and think about how far you took this.

Then a third.

The wedding is tomorrow. Clean yourself up tonight. I'll pick you up in the morning.

I stood in the empty parking space and read all three.

Then I laughed, because I couldn't do anything else.

Even now, he believed there was going to be a wedding.

I opened my phone to call a car.

Two black SUVs swung down the ramp and stopped across the lane in front of me.

The rear door of the first one opened.

My mother, Costanza Bellandi, stepped out in black wool, with her silver-streaked hair pinned in the same chignon she had worn to my father's funeral.

Stefano got out of the second car with two men from our security team.

My mother's eyes went over my face.

They went down to my shaking hands and the blood that had come through my blouse.

"Allegra."

I made it three steps.

Then my knees went, and she caught me.

My mother is not a woman who holds people, and she held me.

"I'm sorry," she said into my hair. "Mamma came too late."

"How did you get here so fast?"

"I got on a plane when you texted me. I didn't wait for you to explain."

She helped me into the back of the SUV.

A doctor was already waiting there with a bag open on the seat.
