Chapter 4: Paid in Full

I looked at the photo for a long time.

Blythe had her hand on her stomach again, the same little gesture from my dining room.

Teresa looked victorious.

"Three weeks," Libby said. "That's disgusting. That's actually disgusting."

"It's fine."

"It's not fine. He called me sounding like a widower, and then he goes and gets engaged?"

"Maybe it was always the plan." I handed her phone back. "His mother wanted Blythe from the start. I was the year in between."

"Lulu."

"I'm fine. Really."

I lay down on the mattress and looked at the ceiling.

The lighthouse beam went past.

Then it went past again.

Libby lay down next to me with her boots still on.

After a while I cried a little, quietly, with my arm over my eyes.

She pretended to be asleep so I wouldn't have to talk about it.

In the morning I got up, made instant coffee in the empty kitchen and opened my laptop on the windowsill.

I logged into my student loan account.

$142,316.08.

I'd been paying the minimum for three years.

I typed in the whole number and pressed the button.

The screen thought about it.

Then a green check mark appeared.

Paid in full.

I sat down on the kitchen floor and laughed out loud.

Libby came in with her hair sticking up and found me there.

"Did somebody die?"

"My loans," I said. "My loans died."

She cheered so loud a gull took off from the porch rail.

Two days later I sat in a paper gown at Maine Medical Center across from a high-risk doctor with a gray ponytail and no patience for small talk.

"Quadruplets," she said, reading my chart. "Naturally conceived?"

"Very naturally."

She almost smiled.

"Then here's what I tell everyone with four. You'll be huge by twenty weeks. You'll probably be on bed rest by twenty-four. If you make it to thirty-two, I'll buy you a cake."
