Chapter 7: Day Eighteen Hundred and Twenty-Six
Cormac's POV
On the evening of day one thousand eight hundred and twenty-six, I sat in a folding chair in the basement of St. Margaret's and said aloud, for the first time, that I was a man who had hurt his wife.
I had said "alcoholic" a thousand times in that room.
I had never said the other thing.
There were nine of us in the circle, under a flickering tube light, with a coffee urn nobody had cleaned since the nineties.
A man across from me nodded and said nothing, which is the whole of the art.
I had counted every day since the night they brought her back.
I did not count the days to feel proud.
I counted because the number was the only thing I owned that I had not been given.
On day forty I had stood in the cemetery behind the parish and read every stone for a name that was not there.
I never found one.
I told myself the baby was in some other ground, and that my mother had seen to it, and that I was not to ask.
